History
Well it is not right being in one place and not know the history couse also this will make you understand bette the people and culture and will definitely help you to understand better why everything is like that around you.
The truth is that you know about ancient Greece. It flourished 500 years before the birth of Christ. There was a great hostility between Athens and Sparta and Sparta eventually won in the end!
In Athena under the acropolis on the market was the center of economic and social life of Athens. All were there and if you walk between ancients in the old market certainly it would be likeit was thousands of years ago since the space is the same.
Ancient Athens was more down and u can find it just below the modern Athens and it is everywhere!
So now we are like 5 meters t more up than the ancients.
After the long period that athens was in charge and all was ended by the victory of Sparta kind of , we had Alexander the Great and greece was everywhere .After that we have Rome as and later had to transfer the capital from Rome to Istanbul Greeks call it KONSTANTINOUPOLI from Konstantinos the king who did the transfer at that time we have the separation from the Catholic Church and the establishment of the Orthodox churches we have so far in Greece, Serbia and Russia more .
All this until 1453 when the Turks then make a strong attack and conquer the city and all of Greece.
This holds about 400 years until 1821 where we have the Greek revolution and eventually the victory and the independence of Greece as a state in 1830 .
Later in 1914 we took part to the World War with the English Italian French and Russians ( against the Austria-Hungary German and the ottoman empire , the turks
Then in 1922, while Greece ran up the coast of Turkey, we have a confilct with the Greek King and the Greek Goverment and we have the Turkish attack and the Asia Minor great disaster, which is nothing other than the shrinking borders of Greece and the repatriation of many thousands of Greeks from these areas of turkey
If you look at Athena there are many areas that have the words NEW in front of
Nea Ionia, New Smyrna New Philadelphia new, new new .
All these are new municipalities were created by refugees who come from Izmir in Turkey, making the New Smyrna to Athens ...
those people helped a lot the economy after ...
Then we have the Second World War , the defeat by the Germans and the occupation of Athens by the Nazis.
At the time and for a couple of years many thousands of Athenians died of hunger.
Coming out of the world war 2 as winners on the side of NATO forces-US-uk-Frenchwe have the maelstrom of civil war from 46 until 1949.
The opposing sides were left to right, something like the Spanish Civil War.
is in fact it is the first possible instance with lots of killing of the Cold War that would followed
The Greek government supported by the British who they never left after the end of the world war 2 and the countryside, which is the left-wing rebels - supported by the communists from soviet union and yogoslavia
This will not last long, so in august 1949 communists are giving up
In this crucial victory help a strengthen to the Greek government by the U.S. known as the Marshall Plan which is basically a plan from U.S. to strengthen Greece and Turkeyand to stem the spread of Communism. which was coming down from Soviet union and Yogoslavia .
Then the Greek and Turkish arms by Americans who make lots of money from this situation, while the divisions between Greek and Turkish stays until today, so we are still the No.1 country in Europe to waste on guns and amo , as appropriate, which will certainly impress our economy .thin that all the Greek Boys MUST go to the army ,,,
in 1967 just before theelections and while the democratic-left was ready to win the elections, the army is on the streets, military law was imposed and the intergovernmental country gets to the military, clearly motivated by the Americans . they even ask 4 sorry cuple of years ago ....
. in November of 1973 students occupy the politehnic University located in Patision street in Exarchia and ask for the withdrawal of the junta and democracy now . On 17 November 73 tanks and police invade the field of the politehnic
university, students have many victims- and the revolt suppressed inblood.After the spring 74 , the Greek junta is trying to make democracy coup in Cyprus.
The Turks invade on the island of Cyprus and manage to win half. Since then, Cyprus has been divided but this was the last think junta in Greece did . we and the cuprys we are like brothers we speak both greeks .anyhow after that in 1974 we have Democracy
ps 1 : after the second World war and after the 50s awe have the large internal migration from the countryside to urban areas and especially in Athens.
Buildings were built , one after another, one more bad than the other.This is why athens is ugly ....Before that uncontrolled building development, Athens was hοuses with one and 2 floors neoclassical with roofs, which you will see many of them, but preserved and ramshackle,
in the center of Athens. It was a real doll then my city!This internal migration beyond this ugly apperance and brought all the Greeks in capital. Think that Greece has around 10 million people and over half live in Athens.
